Access & Equity -

In my search for information on e-learning access and equity, I was amazed at the technological advancements set up in order to provide online learning for everyone, without discrimination.

eg. Jaws - 'Job Access with Speech', which makes audio and text align, and visual elements are tagged. The assistive technology is able to read the screen and let the individual know what the visual graphic is and how it relates to the instruction.

Now there is compliance for online technology for access users - the most recent Legislation - Section 508. The guidelines address accessibility to all electronic information technology, inc faxes, telephone systems, agency websites etc. As e-learning becomes more widely used, compliance will be monitored more thoroughly and appropriate new legislation put in place to cover new technologies.

'Blogs colliding with traditional Media-

Blogs are seen as every increasing up-to-date sources for news for thruth seeking readers. This medium is fast competing against conventional newspaper and television news information.

As Weiss writes, lately bloggers have reaching new threshholds in journalism! eg. a handful of the 15,000 coveted credentials to the Democtratic National Convention - will go to bloggers!, some sites attracting 150,000 readers per day.

These credentials provide a way to promote the 'blogosphere as a new and genuine, legitimate media outlet'.

Blogs as general rule, have little independent reporting, rather more likely to have opinionated, stream of consciousness commentary.

This just all adds to the ever increasing spinning of the media web, that is fast becoming uncontrollable for large medai corporations.



PRE- ONLINE COURSE THOUGHTS -
mmm...a bit apprehensive, as I have to do all the work myself! This course is totally self-directed, and even is marked! The course I have chosen is BBC Online - First Aid, and therefore I have reservations about my current level of first aid knowledge. I am also a bit fearful of failing, as this course is somewhat technical.

However, after perusal of the site, this course offers quite a rnage of learning modes: course notes, infor sheets, multiple choice quizzes, online simulations of accidents, video footage samples, and offers a certificate at the end.
The course also charters your progress and logs you in and out, keeping track of your online time.

I am pretty impressed with this site. Although by the end of this course, I don't know if I will actually feel like I have been worthy of gaining a First Aid Certificate. It all seems a little too easy.

Surely some degree of practicum is required to be competent in first aid. This course is probably just set-up to cover the theoretical components.

The lack of teacher student interaction is always a downside to any online course, as well as no other interaction/ communique from other students.

Maybe I should have chosen 'Learing Italian!
